Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions revealed in February that a live-action Twisted Metal TV program was in the works. Anthony Mackie, who will play a man known only as John Doe, appears to be the star of the action comedy series based on PlayStation’s renowned vehicle combat genre.

Mackie is best known for his roles as the superhero Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (including the upcoming fourth Captain America film) and as the star of the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The Woman in the Window, Synchronic, and Pain & Gain are among Mackie’s other cinematic credits.

Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, tells Deadline, “We’re pleased to have Anthony Mackie on board.” His ability to combine comedy, action, and drama is ideal for the Twisted universe we’re creating.”

Twisted Metal follows a “motor-mouthed insider” who accepts a chance at a better life by volunteering to transport a cargo through an inhospitable wasteland populated with marauding marauders driving cars armed to the teeth. This character will be accompanied by a “trigger-happy” vehicle thief, and it appears that Sweet Tooth will be one of the many maniacs they will face. Mackie’s character is a “smart-ass milkman” who has no recollection of his background. His sole hope is to find a place to call home, and he has a chance to do so if he can survive Twisted Metal’s devastation.

Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are in charge of the show. Michael Jonathan Smith, who wrote Cobra Kai, will write and executive produce the program alongside Will Arnett and Marc Foreman’s production firm, Electric Avenue. There is currently no release date set for the series.
