The International, Dota 2’s annual tournament, will be held in Singapore in October. While Valve has previously conducted The International in the United States, Canada, China, Germany, and Romania, this will be the first time the global esports championship visits Southeast Asia.
In a tweet, Valve announced the impending event, but didn’t provide any other information beyond the venue and date. The competition is noted for its hefty prizes, with the winner team receiving a share of the $40 million prize pool last year. The Dota 2 community has contributed to this massive sum through in-game purchases, and it has only grown over time. We don’t yet know how much money will be given out in this year’s tournament, but we won’t have to wait long to find out.
The International was expected to make its Swedish debut last year after being postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020 in Stockholm, Sweden. However, due to complications with Swedish authorities, Valve was forced to relocate the event to Bucharest, Romania. Due to an increase of COVID-19 instances, Valve had to run the tournament without a live audience in Bucharest. Valve did not immediately answer to The Verge’s request for comment on whether it will take any COVID-19 measures at this year’s tournament.
