According to HBO chief content officer Casey Bloys’ comments to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming The Last of Us series appears to be a faithful translation of the blockbuster video game — but it won’t be airing this year.

“The Last of Us is now filming in Canada. Bloys remarked, “We haven’t announced an air date yet.” “However, it is not the year 2022.” In Calgary, they’re continuing filming.” He also told Deadline that “[The Last of Us] is not going to air in 2022 – they are currently filming in Canada.” I’m guessing you’ll see it in ’23.”

While I’m disappointed that the program won’t premiere until 2022, I’m happy with HBO taking as much time as it needs. I’m comfortable with waiting till the show is ready since The Last of Us is one of my favorite video games, and I truly want to see HBO do it well.

Pedro Pascal from The Mandalorian will play Joel, Bella Ramsey from Game of Thrones will play Ellie, while Merle Dandridge will reprise her role as Marlene from the games. The television show’s executive producer and co-writer is Neil Druckmann, the game series’ creative director, while Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin is also a writer and executive producer.

The new program appears to be part of what appears to be a concerted attempt by Sony to produce film and television adaptations of its games. For example, the long-awaited Uncharted film will be released this week, and there are plans for a Ghost of Tsushima film and a Twisted Metal TV program.
